Fashion trends may come and go, but with the impact one makes by wearing red lipstick prove that this shade of lipstick is immortal. Below, I’m sharing 3 Quick Tips on How to Wear Red Lipstick.
Various shades of red adapt to historical events, climates, and attitudes. Did you know that during World War II red lipstick was manufactured to boost morale?
For me, red lipstick brings fond memories of my mother. I remember watching her apply her lipstick and watched how it brightened up her face and mood. A woman that wears red lipstick will no doubt make more of an entrance as opposed to a woman wearing neutral colored lipstick. If you were to take a poll, I think most women would agree that they would not leave the house without putting on some form of lipstick, gloss, or balm. Personally, I’m a fan of wearing lipstick and enjoy experimenting with several shades.
One of my favorite shades of red lipstick is Mac’s Lady Danger . I don’t know if it is the name or what. But putting on that shade of red makes me feel powerful and sexy.
3 Quick Tips for Wearing Red Lipstick
Prep
Exfoliate your lips before you apply your lipstick. A quick scrub will help to smooth over your lips. This is a great product to use during the winter months.
The winter season wrecks havoc on our lips with the cool temperatures and dry heat. This sleep mask makes your lips feel amazing. I’ve used it throughout the day and enjoy the lasting benefits.
Prime
Have you ever used a lip primer before? A saleslady at Nordstrom once told me, “it’s a crime not to prime” and you know what, she was right. As funny as that sounds, primer really is important. A lip primer will help your color last longer and go on smoothly. After exfoliating I’ll apply a primer and then put on the rest of my makeup. My lipstick always goes on last; I’ll even wait until I’m dressed so that I do not get any lipstick on my clothes.
Line
Wearing darker shades of lipstick will make your lips appear thinner. I always use a liner not just to prevent bleeding, but to also give my lips a little more volume. I look for a liner that is a similar or slightly darker shade than my lipstick. You can use a brush to help blend the liner into your lips to create a fuller lip look.
Red lipstick can add a little sex appeal to any outfit. It has a glamorous effect. I save it for the days when I’m looking to add a little pizzazz to my look. Swiping on red lipstick can make the most mundane outfit look avant-garde.
If you are a little hesitant to try a full red lip, you can experiment with lip gloss. Typically, they are more subtle looking. You can also add a little gloss on top of your matte lip, just apply it in the center of the lower lip, to avoid the color bleeding.
Consider what you are going to wear with your lipstick. I like wearing bright colored lipsticks at the beach because I think it brightens up my face, especially if I’m wearing a big hat and glasses. I’ll also choose red when I’m wearing a solid color especially black.
Lastly, when wearing a red lip, I do suggest that you go minimal on your eye makeup. For example, you won’t want to mix a smoky eye with a red lip. Bold lips are just enough of a wow factor, just add a little eye liner and mascara and you are good to go.

I am not so brave with a red lipstick although it sounds so doable with prepping them as you outlined. My lips are thin and if I try it I’ll go for the gloss! Thanks for the detailed tip!

Hello Heike,
Red can be tricky and it’s not something I reach for everyday. My go to shades are nudes because I also have thinner lips and nudes with a liner can actually add volume. I just like red’s when I have something special or I want a little pizazz to my look. Thank you for reading the blog.
Have a Great Week!
