You can quickly ruin the look of that beautiful outfit by wearing the wrong undergarments. Contouring and shaping your body underneath your clothing will give you the most flattering looks. How do you do this? By investing in good undergarments. As with most women in our age group, gravity has caused drooping and sagging. Purchasing the right undergarments can not only enhance what you are wearing, but also compliment your figure.
Personally, when my underwear feels good it boosts my mood. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve struggled with adjusting falling bra straps, wedged underwear, and too tight shapewear. Every one of these situations has distracted me and kept me from fully enjoying what I’m doing.
Making the right bra choices
Aging causes our breasts to lose their fullness and shape. Since our breast shape has changed, so will our needs in finding the right bra. I have recently found bras that give you support without underwires. This was a game changer for me as I was never comfortable wearing underwire bras.
Must Have Bras
True & Co makes a very comfortable wireless racerback lace bra that has removable pads (My daughter Brittany has this one) For evening wear, I have tried adhesive gel bras. These really do work, but they will not offer much support. Also, you must make sure that your skin is free of any creams or lotions or the gel pads will fall off. A friend of mine swears by the Bring it up Breast Shapers and has used them often. I have yet to give those a try but she raves about them.
Body Contouring with Shapers
Let me first say that these are meant to smooth you out and not necessarily meant to make you look thinner. Many women have the misconception that shapers help you to fit into a too tight dress. Unfortunately, they really aren’t meant to work that way. Another misconception is to buy a smaller size so that it holds you in better, again not true. If you try to wear a smaller size than you are just shifting your body fat. A too tight shaper will just lift your excess skin upward causing it to spill out. My recommendation is if you are going to invest in a body shaper than try a few on and stick to your true size.
I have been wearing the high waisted Flexie from Maidenform. I have two, one in nude and one in black. The higher waist shapers take a little effort to pull on but it accentuates your waistline. These shaper shorts from Target are also very popular and have moisture wicking ability to keep you cool in the summer. I also own a couple body slips, and found that sometimes those could ride up. A solution to this would be the newer body suit versions.
If you saw the movie Book Club (it’s free to stream right now, with Amazon Prime ) then you will remember the hilarious scene when Jane Fonda leads Candice Bergen to a lingerie shop to pick out shape wear before a date. I’ll admit, there were a few times I’ve felt like a contortion artist while struggling to pull up shapewear, however, it is worth the effort because they can work small miracles in smoothing. I’m certainly going to be wearing my high wasted shaper under my gown for my son’s wedding. Although the subject I have avoided here is going to the bathroom. This I’m afraid, takes effort and patience as it has yet to become a simple task.

Hi Nancy,
Great post! I dont wear shapers as I don’t like the feel of the compression, but know they have come a long way.
I finally found a bra that I don’t mind wearing, the Vanishing 360 bra from Soma is smooth in the back and doesn’t have the hook closure, for more comfort.
I wouldn’t mind trying the adhesive bra 🙂
Have a great day!

Hello Rosemary,
My hardest shopping experiences involve bathing suits or jeans. I’m short and the length on any type of pants always has to be shortened. As for suits I often look to see what cute coverups I can wear first.
Have a Great Week,
Nancy

Thanks for the run down on the shapewear. I haven’t been to a formal event in a while and have a wedding coming up. Now I am armed with information 🙂

Hi Nancy,
Thank you for visiting my blog. I’m happy that you found a few items that may interest you. I know its the last thing we always think about wearing when going to any type of event but I’ve actually found myself improvising because I should have paid better attention to undergarments. I hope you find what your looking for.
My Best,
Nancy
