One of my favorite fall treats is a caramel apple. I have been making caramel apples since I was a little girl, and recently I had the pleasure of making them with my two granddaughters. I’m not sure where I saw this idea for Carmel Apple Bites, but I think it’s brilliant because younger children cannot eat an entire apple. Cutting the apple into slices allows children to enjoy this delicious seasonal treat without waste, and it’s a fun activity to do with your grandchildren!
One thing I have struggled with is the caramel sliding off the apples. There are several reasons for that, such as the wax coating on the apples, and the temperature of the caramel. What I found to be a solution to this is that I dipped the apples in melted chocolate first, then drizzled the caramel onto the apples. If you like chocolate, then this works!
Another reason I like cutting the apples into slices is that homemade caramel apples never keep well. Making a smaller batch prevents waste.
Ingredients
- 3-4 apples cleaned and dried
- Craft Sticks
- ½ pkg. caramels
- 1-2 tablespoons of cream
- 1 6 oz. package chocolate chips
Directions:
Slice the apples and place the sticks into the center. Melt the chocolate chips slowly in a microwave and then dip the apples. Lay them flat on wax paper or parchment paper and allow chocolate to harden.
Slowly melt the caramels in the microwave on a low temperature. Add 1-2 tablespoons of cream (I used half and half which I had on hand for my coffee) Using a spoon, drizzle the caramel all over the chocolate dipped apples. If desired, you can top with candy sprinkles or chopped nuts. Let the apples cool completely. Store in the refrigerator.
Fortunately, when we were done one of my granddaughters liked the chocolate and the other the melted caramel so they each had a bowl to lick. It can be messy, but I didn’t mind, we all cleaned up well and as you can see by the smiles, the girls had a lot of fun.
