I wanted a refresh for my face and found that a simple addition to my regular beauty regime made a notable difference. It is no secret that I have had Botox injections and fillers in the past. In fact, I have previously written about my first time experience right here. However, after reading a few stories about women experiencing adverse reactions after receiving fillers post vaccination, I was concerned. For that very reason, I held off with an appointment. Now, enough time has passed since I received my vaccine. Plus, I did not like the tired looking woman I saw each time I passed by a mirror. So, I went ahead and booked my appointment for filler.
Once again, I have no medical background and my writing is of my own personal experience. As always, I suggest you select a professional that you trust who is licensed and trained to administer injections. One of the best ways to start is by asking friends who they use. Next, learn all of the options available and make only realistic decisions.
What does a Filler like Juvederm do?
I was not looking to erase all signs of aging. All I wanted to do was minimize the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and this can be achieved with fillers. There are many types of fillers available and they do not all work the same. This is where a qualified professional will help you to select what works best for you. Whereas Botox freezes the muscles to reduce wrinkles, fillers are injected under the skin to smooth and lift. I choose to have Juvéderm which is a form of hyaluronic acid. Although this ingredient is found in many serums, when injected, it can make your face seem plumper and more lifted. Unlike Botox, which can take up to two weeks to see results, you can see immediate results with Juvéderm injections.
What to Expect at your Filler Appointment
After a consultation and talking about my goals and desires, it was suggested that I start with Botox around my eyes and Juvéderm in my cheeks. Prior to my injections a nurse cleaned my face and applied a topical anesthetic. Adding filler in my cheeks was new for me. I will admit I was nervous about looking too plumped up, however my professional proceeded with caution and allowed me to look in the mirror as she was administering the injections. We both agreed to start out conservatively and enhance further along (I’m pretty sure she detected my anxiousness).
Things to Consider before your Appointment
- Avoid taking any nsaids, vitamins, or supplements that could thin your blood a couple of days before your filler appointment.
- It’s best to skip your evening cocktails the night before an appointment
- Plan your visit several weeks before any special event you are going to to attend, as you will want to allow for possible bruising to subside
- Lastly, I try to schedule in the morning as this allows a fair amount of time before going to bed as its recommended that you do not lie down for 4-6 hours afterwards
How Much Does Filler Cost and How Long Will it Last?
Juvéderm is expensive, however the results may last up to six months. Prices vary per office and range between $675-$750 per syringe. In combination with my Botox injections, my fee for the day was $1100, and yes, this is a lot of money. Although my decision was based upon professionalism and results, always ask about payment plans and bonus programs in which discounts are applied.
The entire procedure did not take long. I had minor swelling afterwards and no bruising at all. Believe it or not, I went to work immediately after my office visit, so the downtime for me was minimal. However, as with everything there are risks involved. And for that reason, you should thoroughly research your appointment center beforehand, because fillers and Botox are not suitable for everyone.
What can you expect afterwards?
Upon checking out, I was handed a sheet with these post injection instructions and scheduled a follow up appointment in two weeks.
Post Filler Treatment Instructions are as follows:
- Do not massage or manipulate the site for 48 hours after treatment as it is imperative the product stays where is is injected for optimal results.
- Sleep on your back for the best outcome
- Sleep with head slightly elevated
- Refrain from dental procedures for 48 hours after filler treatment to decrease any risks of infection.
- No sweating, avoid working out and hot showers
- Do not schedule any further facial treatments for a few weeks
That evening my face felt warm and was slightly swollen. I applied a cold compress, however no pain medication was necessary. The next day the swelling was down, and I returned to work amazed that I did not even have a single bruise. Upon my two-week post injection visit I was presented with my before and after photos. I was pleased with the results as it was a subtle change in my appearance which resulted in just what I was looking for, a natural looking re-fresh. I felt my decision to get injections was well worth the investment and scheduled another appointment in the months to follow.
Self-esteem and confidence are achieved by happiness that comes from within. To me this is what makes a person beautiful. Remember to always do what makes you happy. I do not dress for others, I dress for me. I choose to get fillers because the results make me feel good. Especially now when I look in the mirror as I no longer see that tired looking woman.

You look fabulous. I can’t wait to go for an appointment for myself! Hopefully I will set something up in the next couple of weeks. I say if it makes you feel better, why not? Xo

I agree and the other factor to remember is to be realistic, lets face it we aren’t going to change our looks completely. The key is to ask for subtle changes too much is not a good look let alone natural for our age group.

I’m happy that it did go well as there are unfortunate experiences for some. I’m hoping that I have enlightened someone from my perspective that results can be good.

You look phenomenal!! I’m sold.
And thank you for including prices and all the info re: vaccine and after-care.
The thing that bothers me the most are the dark eye circles I have. I think if I gained weight they’d go away — kind of like Oprah — but in “fanny or face” I picked fanny. But I’ve heard that Juviderm drastically reduces dark circles. I don’t have bag, but annoying circles.
Great post!

I think the most important info I can pass along is to do your research and trust your doctor. Wishing you all the best in what ever you decide!

The filler is so subtle. You look fabulous. I get Botox for my forehead but have not really thought about fillers. Thank you for sharing.
Nancy Weiss says
Hi Kim,
Fillers are somewhat new to me too. I’m happy with the results and subtle is just what I wanted. I love my age and just want to look rested not younger.
Midlife and beyond says
Wow the filler is so subtle. You look amazing – a lovely natural look. Thank you for this post, I do have a fear of getting something done and not looking like myself, this shows it needn’t be the case at all.

Hi Alison,
I had mentioned to some one else that subtle was all I wanted. I felt this made me look rested and not different. I do love my age and I do not want to look younger, just not so tired looking. I shared because I do feel that many women feel the same scared yet interested and maybe this will help.
Thank you for reading and reaching out.

Looks good Nancy!! I do the liquid facelift once a year.(restalyn lift) This year it didn’t last because I’ve been losing weight and metabolism has sped up. I didn’t even consider that, but something else to keep in mind. I say if it it makes you feel better about you, doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks:)

It was a very subtle change however it made a significant difference for me Mel. I’m happy I did it and that is why I decided to write about it.
