Discover the Magic of Key West: Your Ultimate Getaway Guide
If you’re seeking a little adventure, relaxation, or a reason to celebrate, join me as I take you to Key West, Florida. Nestled on the southernmost tip of our nation, this tropical paradise offers a laid-back charm, excellent weather, and abundant activities. Key West is more than shrimp boats, sunsets, oysters, and beer, as mentioned in the song Tin Cup Chalice by the late Jimmy Buffet. There’s something here for everyone. For one, it’s a food lovers’ paradise; it has an amazing collection of art studios and fascinating museums, and history buffs will appreciate tours of Earnest Hemingway’s home or the Harry S. Truman Little White House.
Getting There: The Key West Express
For a change of scenery, my husband and I recently took the Key West Express, a ferry service from Fort Myers, Florida. The Key West Express Big Cat has three decks with both indoor and outdoor seating, televisions, snacks, and beverages. We left around 8 a.m. and docked in Key West at approximately 11:40 a.m. Though it may seem long, it beats the six-hour drive by car and allows you to relax, catch up on reading, and enjoy the Gulf Waters.
Where to Stay: Margaritaville Beach House Key West
Upon arrival, we took a hotel shuttle to the Margaritaville Beach House Key West, located a short distance from the historic Old Town. We were welcomed with complimentary margaritas, and while we couldn’t check in yet, we changed into our bathing suits, had lunch, and relaxed by the pool. The hotel’s casual, relaxing atmosphere was perfect for unwinding after our journey. The hotel’s slogan is “Finns Up,” which couldn’t be more appropriate with the casual, relaxing atmosphere. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we missed a text telling us our room was ready. Our hotel room was spacious, with an outdoor balcony. After unpacking and freshening up, we were anxious to head back to town and explore the local shops and Duval Street happy hours. Margaritaville Beach House Beach offers a complimentary shuttle that leaves every hour. This was convenient as it saved us additional transportation expenses.
Margaritaville Beach House Key West offers Florida residents an exclusive offer of up to 20% off for standard guest rooms and up to 20% off for two or more nights booked in the property’s spacious one- and two-bedroom suites. In addition, guests in the suites also receive a $50 credit daily. (Use Code: FLRES) Offers valid for stays June 1-Sept. 30, 2024. Must be booked by July 31, 2024.
Exploring the Local Scene: Duval Street
Our first stop was Duval Street, the heart of Key West’s vibrant nightlife and shopping. The street buzzes with energy, offering an eclectic mix of bars, restaurants, and shops. We began at the Hard Rock Café and then crossed the street to Caroline’s for happy hour cocktails. Interesting fact: many local restaurants start happy hour as early as 10 am!
Next, it was time for dinner. Key West’s culinary scene is a delightful infusion of flavors, catering to every taste. My husband and I were pleasantly surprised by the variety of dining cuisines, as there is something for every taste palette. We decided to have dinner on the waterfront and made reservations at Louie’s Backyard. It was just under 2 miles from where we were on Duval Street, so we decided to walk. Although getting around is easy, aside from taxis, you can ride in a rickshaw or rent scooters, golf carts, and bicycles.
Louie’s Backyard did not disappoint; the entrée’s had a Caribbean essence, and the water’s serenity helped make this a memorable and romantic evening.
Dining in Key West: A Culinary Adventure
Over the next two days, we dined at many well-known local favorites, Blue Heaven and The Breakfast Club Too, for tasty, hearty breakfasts, enjoyed a strong cup of coffee and a Cuban sandwich at Cuban Coffee Queen, sampled the Korean tacos at Garbo’s Grill, which was featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, and strolled through the Bahama Village Market for shopping, which was accompanied by bloody Marys and live musicians. As a quick side note, we were told that the Locals all go to the Green Parrot Bar, but we have never made it there *yet*.
Things to Do & See
While Key West is known for its dynamic nightlife, its rich history and culture should not be overlooked. We explored:
– Zachary Taylor State Park: Enjoy your favorite water sports on its beautiful beach and tour a national historical monument dating back to the Civil War.
– Sunset Cruise: The spectacular sunsets in Key West are a must-see. We booked our sunset cruise with Sebago Watersports, and it was wonderful. The boat was exceptionally nice, the staff was very friendly, and the sunset was spectacular. They even let me take the boat for a cruise!
An Unforgettable Getaway
Key West is an incredible destination with its charming streets, unique boutiques, lively nightlife, delicious restaurants, and surreal sunsets. Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or unforgettable memories, Key West offers it all. Or you can soak up the sun and eat oysters.
