Well, where do we start…. there is so much to say about the ever so popular blue jean. Jeans are a fashion staple in everyones closet no matter your age. The style trends may come and go but denim will most likely remain a fashion staple for both men and women of any age.
A Little History of Jeans
Let’s start at the beginning. Jeans were first worn by coal miners and cowboys with the actual fabric being so durable that they were worn for practicality. In the fifties, blue jeans started to become stylish to wear. I know this because I watched the sitcom Happy Days where Fonzi and Richie wore cuffed jeans with white tee shirts. I also recall seeing pictures of Marilyn Monroe wearing heels with cuffed jeans. Think here about how Olivia Newton John and the cast of the movie Grease reintroduced wearing heels with jeans. Which by the way, is still a very stylish look.
In the 60’s Hippies wore ragged bell bottomed denim with sewn on patches for a laid-back cool vibe. In the 70’s Brooke Shields made a commercial for Calvin Klein and the “You know what comes between me and my Calvin’s?” quote made blue jean history. Soon after, there was the high waisted “mom jean.” Embellishments on jeans started with rhinestones and studs around the mid 90’s. (Thinking about my bedazzler once again, although I no longer have it).
Soon afterwards skinny jeans started making an appearance in every color you could imagine. For a while, blue jeans took a back seat to leggings and jeggings and jean sales dropped considerably. However, just as any other fashion trend that comes and goes, jeans are once again a popular style.
What’s the hottest look for jeans right now?
All the above! We see frayed hem’s and fringed hems. We see skinny jeans in all the colors of the rainbow. There’s baggie boyfriend jeans and flared bottomed jeans. Cropped jeans and cuffed jeans. Just take your pick to what style fits and suits your personality the best. The embellishments we see now are pearl buttons, and glittered ribbons down the side, embroidered flowers, and some have patches. I didn’t even talk much about the skin baring slits that are cut into the knee’s or down the legs. You really cannot go wrong as just about any style is in right now. Even mom jeans have made a comeback.
I’ve cut my own jeans to crop them or give them a frayed edge hem at the bottom. If you are creative, then go ahead and play around with styling jeans your own way. If you mess them up then you can always turn them into cutoffs. (Just kidding!)
Finding the right pair of jeans
In conclusion, given the comfort of denim, jeans will never go away. I also think every woman should own a good fitting pair of blue denim jeans, a blue denim jacket, and a blue denim shirt. No question about it all of these pieces should be in your closet because they are flattering basic pieces that a woman can wear regardless of her age.
