While pant waistlines have risen, skirt hemlines have dropped down. Longer skirts, or as our generation once referred to them, midi and maxi skirts are back. This fall I’ve seen many stylish skirts that women of all age groups will look fantastic wearing. I’m happy to see longer skirts for several reasons. They are flattering to any figure type and they are feminine. You can wear them during the daytime or in the evening. Another great thing about longer skirts is that they are comfortable and that is why I will be seen wearing them.
4 Types of Skirts on Trend this Fall
- Currently we are seeing many micro-pleated long skirts. Micro-pleated skirts can be worn with longer tunic tops, belted at the waist blouses, or thin loose fitted sweaters. Great for date night!
- Long Denim and flannel Skirts have somewhat of a western vibe. Perfect if you’re attending early fall parties that will have you spending time outside. Think about sipping wine around a fire pit.
- Tulle is cool! We are seeing a lot of tulle. Do not keep yourself from wearing a long tulle skirt because you think they are for the younger women. There are many ways to style a long tulle skirt. Take this skirt for example. One way to wear it, that I like and that is middle age appropriate, would be to pair a tulle skirt with a fitted turtleneck and boots. Again, you can also add a belt over a long tunic sweater. For a more casual, but cool look, wear a tulle skirt with a graphic tee shirt and a short jacket.
- Leather and suede skirts are a perfect for colder fall and winter days. This classic style looks good with tall boots and cozy sweaters. They’re perfect for evenings in the city and swanky restaurants.
Shoes to wear with longer skirts
Long to the floor skirts can be worn with flats or fun sneakers, but my favorite would be boots. If your skirt is midi length then go for a stacked heel bootie, or tall boots.
Top it Off
Top off your long skirt with shorter jackets. Leather bomber jackets will look great! A lighter alternative would be a blazer or a denim jacket. Blazers and long skirts take me back to the 70’s when I was in high school. I have a very vivid picture of my friends at homecoming wearing blazers, long plaid skirts, and six-inch platform shoes. Platform shoes are in style now too, but let’s leave those for the young. Falling off shoes at our age could be disastrous.

I love the longer lengths in skirts this season.
And, I am glad they are making a comeback.
To me they feel so very feminine.
