Frayed jeans are not a new fashion trend. Cut-off denim shorts have been worn for decades. The only difference is that back in the ’70s, you made your own. Now designers charge up to $250 for a distressed frayed pair of jeans. It has been years since I took a pair of scissors to my denim. But last week, I changed that for me. While our son and daughter-in-law stayed with us, my daughter-in-law wore this cute puff-sleeved frayed denim jacket. You can see the jacket here. So, rather than go out and purchase a new jacket, I decided to experiment with one I already owned. Although I was initially nervous, I was extremely pleased with the results. I decided to post a reel about it on Instagram, and the response was incredible! If you missed seeing it, you can view how to fray jean jacket here.
How to Fray Your Jean Jacket
1. Start with denim that is mostly cotton. Many jeans have stretchable fabric, such as spandex which will not fray well. At least 97%-98% cotton is best.
2. Unlike hemlines, you need not worry about drawing any lines to make sure the hems are even. Just cut along the edge of the collar and the bottom of your jacket as I did. With a frayed look, it doesn’t need to look perfect.
3. I used my kitchen scissors which have a bit of a jagged edge. You can cut tiny slits into the fabric to help guide the scissors and shredding.
4. Next, wash and dry as the fabric directs.
5. Here’s a tip- if you want more of a frayed look, take a clean brush and fluff up the edges, then wash and dry again.
Removing the collar and the bottom hemline gives my jean jacket a new trendy appeal. There is nothing like the relaxed fit of a worn-in jean jacket. However, if you feel the need to give new life to something old, this is a simple and easy technique.

I was nervous at first but very pleased with the results. As for an extra jacket try looking at resale shops to find one for less 🙂
