This past week three of my friends had reached out to me asking that I do a blog on maintaining your hair color during the quarantine. Many of us, including myself are struggling with our hair. My grays are beginning to sparkle as if I had hair extensions Given the fact that I am not a professional stylist and my personal experience with DIY hair color was a disaster, I reached out to my trusted friend and stylist, Erica Pontarelli from My Salon in Geneva, IL.
I asked Erica what we can do to manage our roots while we waiting until we can once again visit a hair salon. Erica passed along the information below in regards to at home coloring.
I wouldn’t recommend any home hair color hair color for the sole reason that some of the chemicals may interact with professional colors. Certain brands of hair color contain chemicals that would cause hair damage if you were to go to a salon for highlights afterwards.
One brand that she feels comfortable recommending if you wanted to give it a try is be L’Oreal. Because, they have a professional line which is used in many salons. Some salons are dropping off color kits which really goes against a hair stylists license.
Hair Tip-Try a Root Concealer Spray
To get by until you can schedule an appointment Erica recommended L’Oreal Professional hair touch up root concealer. It’s a temporary concealer for your hair. And, what’s nice about them is that they will wash out with a shampoo if you do not like the results.
I also asked Erica about using a temporary color gloss that can purchased in drugstores. She commented that glosses they will not cover your grays, and sometimes they could change the color of your highlights. If you’re not comfortable trying to color your hair at home, then the touch up products are a good choice.
More Hair Tips- Shampoo Less, Change Your Part and Avoid Sun Exposure
To maintain my own color, I’ve started shampooing less often. I also changed the part on my hair to hide the grays. By moving your part, you will be able to hide some of your grown out color. I am also wearing hats to prevent the sun from bleaching out the color when I’m outside.
As I’m writing this blog I know this is not about vanity. We are not concerned with how we look; we are longing for the confidence that a good hair day gives us. We are yearning to feel good about ourselves again. A great hairstyle instantly changes our outlook. It gives us self-assurance. There is a lot of uncertainty now. When we do find that we can get out again, appreciate the small things in life that bring you joy. Make memories that you can cherish and treat yourself to something that makes you feel happy.
With all that being said I’m reminded of that legendary phrase from L’Oréal Paris which originated forty years ago. Because I am worth it. Let us never doubt this about yourself.
