Well, I don’t think I need to talk about the weather in Chicago as we have had record-breaking frigid cold temperatures for a way too many days in a row. With that being said, no one is putting away his or her winter clothes just yet. It looks like heavier fabrics and creative layering will be sticking around for a bit longer in the Midwest.
Let’s talk about the color blue
Wearing blue evokes feelings of calmness. It is favored by many and often considered conservative and traditional.
Dressing with the Color Wheel
When thinking about what color to wear with another think about the color wheel. When coordinating clothes, you need to think about what shades and tones work well together. Usually the colors on the color wheel next to each other match well and create a serene appearance.
Picking colors opposite from each other on the color wheel create a complimentary and high contrast look. You really need to play around with color and wear what you as an individual are comfortable with.
How to style a blue jacket \\ Option 1- Style with Similar Colors from the Color Wheel
With my first look, a Midnight Blue Velvet Elie Tahari Jacket, I kept the look monochromatic with shades and tones of blue.
I’m wearing it with navy wide legged velour drawstring pants and a navy and black satin blouse. I have also worn this jacket with dark denim jeans, the same navy and black blouse and then tied a black satin ribbon thru my jean belt loops as my belt.
In addition, I have a couple of navy dresses and I will wear this blue velvet jacket over them as my coat.
When making clothing or shoe purchases it’s in your best interest to ask yourself how you will wear it. If you know you can wear it more than one way then it can be a valuable purchase. The more often you wear something, the more value you receive from your purchase.
How to style a blue jacket \\ Option 2- Style with Colors that are opposite on the color wheel
Next, with the light blue mohair coat, I decided to go opposite the color wheel and pair it with a contrasting color. I like the way the shades of cranberry and wine look against the pale blue, as it is no longer a conservative and traditional shade of blue.
Colors that go well with blue tones
taupe, cream, maroon, light blue and dark blue together, light pink, or blush
Unexpected impact colors to pair with blue tones
greens, yellows, reds, orange, lilac, and fuchsia
Have fun playing around with color. Yes, it’s a safe choice to pair colors with neutrals but why play it safe all the time? If you don’t feel comfortable with the more vibrant brighter colors, try experimenting with pastel shades. The softer shades are like a breath of fresh air, they give a pleasant and refreshing vibe.
I know that I’ve mentioned before that I personally like to incorporate color into my wardrobe, but one of the more popular trends you will see this spring are neutrals and I plan to give that a try.
Once I find my way with beige tones, ivory, and whites, I’ll be writing to tell about it. In the meantime, I’ll be wearing my winter blues until I can get back to Florida and then the gulf coast is my favorite shade of winter blue!
