While waistlines have risen, hemlines have dropped down. Longer skirts, or as our generation referred to them maxi skirts, are back! I’m happy to see longer skirts for several reasons. They are flattering to any figure type, they are feminine, and you can wear them in the daytime or in the evening. Another great thing about long skirts is that they are comfortable and that is why I will be wearing them this summer-
There are so many ways to wear an always chic long skirt
Currently we are seeing many micro pleated long skirts made of lightweight flowy fabric. These longer skirts can be worn with longer tunic tops, tied at the waist blouses, or thin loose fitted sweaters. Like this skirt from H&M.
Another popular longer skirt is a ruffled version, a ruffled skirt would look best with a white or denim button down shirt that is loosely knotted, like this one from Walmart that’s $15! If you’re still in doubt with what to wear with a ruffled skirt just throw on a plain t-shirt (this one is Brittany’s favorite and $16!) it won’t fail you.
Tulle skirts that hit the floor are also popular for summer. You are a seeing tulle skirts worn with graphic t-shirts. Sachin and Babi, a popular designer has paired them with their own stylish tee shirts. This is definitely more of a trendy look.
Stripped skirts which are a perfect summer look and always a classic choice are often paired with white or colored t-shirts. Stripped skirts can crush a nautical look if you’re boating or at the beach.
Shoes to wear with long skirts
Back in the 60’s and 70’s hippies walked around barefoot. It wasn’t at all unusual to see women in long skirts, floppy hats, and no shoes. Thankfully, those days are over and for more practical reasons, we choosing to wearing shoes.
Long to the floor skirts can be worn with flats, sandals, or sneakers . If your skirt is mid length then go for a stacked heel, or low bootie. Although, any of these shoe styles I’ve mentioned will compliment longer and mid length skirts.
Top it Off
Lastly, you can never go wrong with a denim jacket over a longer skirt as together they complete your entire outfit. However, if you want a little more Bohemian vibe, then try a shorter denim vest with a longer skirt. Still looking for options? Then a leather bomber jacket is a fun and voguish topper for your long skirt.
Embrace your inner Hippie
Regardless, there are so many types of long skirts in stores right now. Own this free-spirited style and throw on a long skirt. It doesn’t matter if you were a hippie or a preppie back in the sixties and seventies there is a skirt style just for you. Peace & Love…
