You will be seeing spots soon as polka dots will be showing up on clothing racks this spring and summer. This isn’t something new as polka dots have been around for quite a while. As for me, I have vivid memories of both of my Italian grandmothers wearing navy dresses with white polka dots and their black oxford shoes. Which by the way those black oxford shoes would be in style right now too. Basically, I think anyone that had first generation European grandmothers saw them wearing a polka dot dress.
Moving on from grandmothers, I can recall pictures of Lady Diana wearing a polka dot dress and more recently stylish actress, Abigail Spencer, wore a polka dot dress to Megan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding.
I’m up for it, why not? There are a variety of ways you can wear polka dots. You can take this timeless fashion trend and make it your own by what you’re comfortable with.
A few ideas on how to wear polka dots
Let’s take for example black and white polka dot blouse a can be worn with either neutrals for a sophisticated look or bright colors for a more playful look.
This High waisted yellow and white polka skirt that I found can be worn with a white tee shirt, or a sleeveless denim shirt
A Red and White polka dot shirt can be worn with a pair of jeans, however I like this Free People scarf with the white tee shirt and jeans.
You can also mix polka dots with florals but you’ll need to balance the patterns. Say if the polka dots are small then the floral print can be larger or vice versa.
Now, if you want to just add a single polka dot accessory, I would go with shoes. Wearing a pair of polka dot shoes gives a little of that business on top party on the bottom impression.
If you are not sure how to wear polka dots and want to experiment with the look- start with a small pattern as opposed to a large print. In this red and white free people dress that Brittany and I are wearing has very small polka dot details. I am very comfortable in sundresses as they are feminine and depict a relaxed casual look.
Polka dots are an ageless ensemble that a woman of any age can wear. Just ask any European Grandmother. No matter whether it’s an accessory or a clothing I think that polka dots say let’s have fun. So go ahead and some have fun and let yourself feel whimsical.
