Do not put away your sparkle, as shimmery and iridescent clothing are a surprising trend this upcoming spring and summer season. Wearing subtle shimmer can provide a feeling of classy yet innovative style. Keep shimmer where you want to draw attention. Whether it is an accessory such as a pair of flats, a clutch, a tee, or a jacket, you should always limit to only one eye-catching item. It used to be when I would think of wearing metallic colors only silver and gold would come to mind. However, now you are seeing all the colors of the rainbow glistening down the runways. In addition, two other popular metallic colors, pewter and rose gold, are also appearing on clothing and accessories.
From the 70’s with the sparkly disco look to today’s now trending rages, metallics have held on through the decades. Just make sure you choose your shine with caution as to not look like a studio 54 wrinkle in time. In other words, remember that less is more when wearing shine.
In the eighties I owned a pair of silver loafers and wore them with jeans as an everyday shoe. This past summer, I recently picked up a pair of silver metallic Franco Sarto silver slides and found that once again they were my go-to shoe with shorts, skirts, and casual summer dresses.
Metallics can be a perfect neutral if you choose to wear them that way. They no longer shout, “Hey! look at me.”
For the upcoming spring and summer season, I love the look of white denim with a silver shoe. You can dress up the look with a floral blouse or play it down with a chambray shirt. Either way I’m using the metallics as my neutral more and more.
I purchased this LE ROC silver jacket several years ago in Las Vegas. (of course, in Las Vegas you look underdressed it you aren’t wearing any shimmer). I have to say I still reach for it to pair with jeans and a tee or as a lightweight jacket with a dress. I pretty much wear it any time you would wear jean jacket. Thus, an investment well made, especially because I had to convince my husband that I needed it.
How to wear Metallic Colors
- Silver Metallic-goes extremely well with shades of pastel. light blues, pinks, and greens
- Gold Metallic goes well with deeper colors such as olive, coffee, tangerine, and darker blue shades
- Rose Gold Metallic-goes well with aqua, light pink, and grey
- Pewter Metallic goes well with white, yellow, and turquoise
If you’re looking to add some metallic to your wardrobe do not limit yourself to basic silver and gold but remember to think about pewter or rose gold. Personally, just about every accessory that I have purchased in a metallic shade has carried me through years of wear and I never felt that they were dated.
My suggestion for this season’s metallic mania is to find something that you feel reflects your inner style and give your spring summer look a little dazzle. I never really understood why they let disco die; it was such a fun era.
