I would feel safe saying that more than any other piece of clothing, the little black dress is the most favorite essential that every woman has in her closet. In fact, I think that most of us probably own more than one. The LBD is probably the most versatile and timeless piece of clothing a woman can own. Black is slimming, black is sophisticated, and black is appropriate any time of day. Most of all, a black dress will hang on past all the other fashion trends longer than any other item of clothing women will ever possess. I’ll be honest when I was younger, I put black dresses in two categories, cocktail dresses and funeral dresses. Maybe that is somewhat still true but aside from that, there are several ways to style and wear a black dress.
The color itself is seasonless, just choose your fabric with the temperatures in mind
A few tips to keep in mind when styling your little black dress
- Accessories and jewelry will add or take away from the simplicity
- Wearing flats or low booties for a more effortless look
- Add a pop by wearing colored or patterned hosiery
- For a more dramatic look wear an eye-catching statement heel or high boot
I love the look of a denim jacket with a black dress, but more recently I’ve swapped out the denim for my metallic jacket. Another fun look would be the trendy bomber jackets worn over your LBD.
Want a more casual look? Play around with layering for example you can wear a blouse underneath or a cozy sweater on over the dress. Remember multiples, in the 90’s, that’s about when my layering skills began.
Most importantly, choose a classic cut and make sure fits you well, if you need to alter your dress then do so. This dress is supposed to be a staple in your closet so make sure you are comfortable with the fit because you want it to be your go to dress when you are in what I refer to as “Frock Shock.” (Frock shock is a term I use when ever I’m undecided on what to wear) Yes, I do make these things up 🙂
A Little Black Dress Themed Party
When I think about the LBD the first thought that comes to mind is Audrey Hepurn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I could not finish this story if I didn’t tell you about the Little Black dress themed Bridal Shower, I hosted for my daughter Brittany with that theme in mind. Everyone wore black dresses and she wore white, it was a fun shower and I’ve added a few pictures for you to see. I guess I should have realized then that Brittany and I had a shared passion for clothing.
I know that I have said over and over again that I prefer to wear color, and I do. However, a L.B.D. is iconic. And, most of the time, will not be a bad choice. L.B.D.’s have been worn thru a multitude of generations and will continue to be a safe option. As for me, I’ll admit I do have more than just a few black dresses, however, I probably own more black pants than a woman needs but who’s counting?
