Magical Unicorn Food -An easy & fun recipe to make with kids
Unicorns have been described as providing a feeling of perpetual bliss. They are mystical creatures that bring pure happiness and satisfaction. Perhaps this explains why so many young children are obsessed with them. Their innocence allows them to view life worry free. My daughter Brittany was infatuated with the My Little Pony toy line back in the 80’s, which was my first introduction to the unicorn obsession. Since then I now have four granddaughters that adore anything with rainbows and unicorns.
Earlier this month I was in Florida, and as I was heading back home, I was excited and looking forward to spending time with my granddaughters. As you may know, I try to make the most of our time together. I put a lot of thought into ideas and creative activities we can do together. Since I enjoy time in the kitchen, I thought I would have them help me make something fun to eat. This is how I came up with a recipe for unicorn food.
When you cook with children recipes must be simple and easy. You want to keep them entertained before they lose interest.
I picked up my 4-year-old granddaughter and took her with me to Michaels. We went to the section where they have all the cupcake decorating supplies, and then my imagination started flowing. I told her we were going to make unicorn food and I let her pick out the magical ingredients.
There are so many options to choose from. This recipe can be as creative and imaginative as you would like. She picked out purple, blue, and pink sprinkles. She also found tiny pink candy hearts and purple gold dust. I picked up a few bags of melting chocolate wafers and then we were done.
At first, I had planned to make white chocolate bark with the purple gold dust and sprinkles but then I decided I would add popcorn and pretzels to the recipe. You will find that when you make this recipe you too may want to create your own version.
Mystical and Magical Ingredients
- 2/3 cup of popcorn kernels
- 3 TBS. Coconut Oil
- 1 bag Gummy Bears
- 2 cups regular or gluten free pretzels
- 1 pkg. good quality white and or dark chocolate
- Sprinkles, colored gold dust, colorful non-perils candy
- Sea Salt (to taste)
- You can substitute about 5 cups of rice Chex for the popcorn
- the sprinkles and purple gold dust show up well on the white chocolate, however I also made a batch with dark chocolate because our family loves to eat dark chocolate
Enchantingly Delightful Directions
- Place the coconut oil in a pan with 3 kernels of corn and heat. When the kernels pop the oil is hot enough add the rest of the 2/3 cup of kernels in an even layer. Then cover with a lid and pop.
- Gently shake your pan until all kernels are popped-and be careful not to burn the corn. Once the popping slows to several seconds between pops, remove popcorn from heat.
- Next, add the popcorn to a large bowl and then add the pretzels and the gummy bears.
- Melt your chocolate in the microwave this will only take about 1 ½ minutes.
- Pour the melted chocolate into a large bowl with the popcorn and pretzels, shake a few dashes of sea into the mixture and stir well with a wooden spoon.
- After mixing well, pour the popcorn mixture onto a wax paper lined baking sheet.
- Next, you can add the candy decorations and this is when the kids get excited about helping.
- I let them shake on the sprinkles, candy, and colored gold dust. Lastly, allow it to set about an hour and then break it into pieces. I stored the unicorn food it in zip lock bags.
Everyone will love this delicious treat!
This is not exactly a healthy snack but I’m certain it will not fail you at having fun. I must also tell you that it does taste pretty good. Myself as well as my adult children enjoyed eating it too.
For the moments you share with a child in their imaginary fairytale like life, you forget about complicated adult life situations and that is what is known Unicorn Magic!
