As we continue with a healthy outlook towards 2019, let’s talk about health from the inside out. What we eat of course determines our overall health and vitality. Smoothies are a great way to start your day and offer many benefits. I’ve been making smoothies now for about 10 years. This all started when my oldest son worked near our home and would often come by for lunch. I noticed his skin was glowing and looked good. Then I watched what he ate for lunch and I’ve never stopped making smoothies since.
My smoothie recipes vary as it depends what I have in the house and what fruits are in season. I’ve tried all sorts of combinations from green smoothies to smoothies with pineapple and mango. However, my go to smoothie is the recipe below.
Blueberries are a great source of antioxidants and are great for your skin. However, I also believe that flaxseed and wheat germ play a crucial role in getting a healthy glow. I also add Yogurt or Kefir for the probiotics. Probiotics have antibacterial properties that aid in stomach health. Good stomach health promotes healthy looking skin.
My key ingredients to smoothies
- Whole Golden Flaxseed– loaded with nutrients and omega 3’s. Also rich in fiber and protein
- Wheat Germ– contains potassium, magnesium, zinc, and vitamin E
- Berries-Vitamin C and antioxidants
- Spinach- contains Iron and calcium
I make my husband and I smoothies about 3-4 times a week. In the summer, I use coconut water instead of regular filtered water for the extra nutrients and to help with hydration. I also swear by my Vitamix, as it blends the ingredients to a perfect creamy and smooth texture. When it broke, and I was waiting for a part I was forced to use my regular blender and my smoothies tasted grainy.
My go to smoothie recipe
- ½ cup Pomegranate or dark Cherry Juice
- 1 Banana
- Mixed Berries, such as Strawberries, Blueberries, Raspberries
- 1Tbs. of whole golden Flax Seed
- 1Tbs. Wheat Germ
- 1Tbs. of Organic Manuka Honey
- 1/2 Cup of Greek Yogurt or Kefir
- Hand full of spinach
- A few ice cubes and about 1/2/or more of cup water
Place all ingredients in your blender and blend on high until the desired texture of your drink. I like mine thicker a little like a milk shake.
Mix up your ingredients
Suggestions for substitutions include coconut flakes, celery, and kiwi, apples. When I use almond milk, coconut water, or apples, I do not need to add honey. The taste really depends on what you like.
I’ve made more smoothie than needed at times because I’ve added too much of something. In that case, when you have a little smoothie left, freeze it in an ice cube tray and use them next in place of ice cubes. Or fill up a Popsicle tray for easy and healthy popsicles the next time your grandchildren are over.
Also, bananas ripen rather quickly so before they get bad, I slice them, and put them in small plastic bags and place them in the freezer.
I’ll be honest here, as there are many days I’ve started out healthy and as the days goes on I lose my incentive and eat unhealthy. But starting out good is better than doing nothing, so drink up!
Life is like a smoothie the more goodness that goes into it, the better the results.
Healthy Cheers to you!
