What are paper bag pants?
Let’s first start with explaining what exactly paper bag pants look like. Paper Bag Pants are loose fitting pants that are gathered at the waistline with a tie belt. The spring/summer versions are showing a cropped length pant whereas most previous versions were a longer pant length. I have a grey pair of loose baggy style paper bag pants that I’ve had for a while.
Just as several other items of clothing I have accumulated over time, these pants are back in style and I’m wearing them in the pictures. I wore them with a short-cropped jacket. The long baggy versions gathered at the waist can complement just about any figure type or shape. I’m not very tall, so I wore mine with a heeled shoe to balance the look. I would probably recommend that if you’re looking to purchase a pair and not very tall to choose the cropped length pants. Unless of course you don’t mind wearing a higher wedge or a stacked heel with them.
Three Ways to style paper bag pants.
- The shorter cropped versions can be worn with tank tops or tee shirts. I would pick a low healed sandal, a trendy gym shoe, or a flat slide for a sporty casual daytime look
- The longer pant looks can be worn with a blouse or a cropped sweater and a low-heeled bootie for a dressier or business casual look.
- Cropped and shorter fitted jackets would look best complete your outfit
Paper bag pants can be more comfortable than a pair of skinny jeans because of their loose fit. Which would make them a great choice for traveling, sightseeing, or when you’re going to need to be wearing them all day long. They also come in a variety of fun striped patterns and fabrics to choose from. Once again if you were to choose a pattern or striped pant then I would go with a solid top as a solid pant would work well with a striped or floral print top.
You will also see the cinched waistline in baggy fitting shorts and skirts this season too. It didn’t take long to discover that the newer paper bag pants are a little bit of a throwback from the 90’s. The 90’s versions had thicker fabric or leather belts and were worn with longer boyfriend jackets. Looking back at pictures, this was a lot of fabric between the pants and the jacket for even a taller person to be wearing. Today’s newer versions of paper bag pants have a tie waist belt and the top portions are aren’t as over sized. I’ll be giving these pants a try once again but I think I’ll make sure that my 90’s big hair stays in the past.
