Trench Coat Inspired Dresses
Trench coats are and always have been a stylish way to keep you warm. For decades we have seen them on women dressed in various ways. Trench coats have been styled over evening dresses or worn casually with jeans and a pair of gym shoes. Traditional trench coats used to just come in a tan or neutral colors but we are now seeing them in a variety of colors. The jackets are typically made of a heavy cotton or canvas material.
The so-called trench coat dresses that we are seeing now (otherwise known as a coat dress) are everywhere. I feel that when you wear a coat dress you can’t go wrong. They are stylish and classy and yet very understated. I typically think of the British and Burberry when I see khaki colored trench coats. When Meghan Markle was seen wearing a sleeveless pale pink trench coat dress to an event in London a new wave of trench coat dressing hit the fashion industry.
Another name for this trend is Utility Dressing. You will also see jumpsuits and cargo pants all with industrial inspired details. Patch pockets, zippers, and buckled belts are some of the details that adorn utility dresses and pants. Belted trousers are also showing up everywhere again.
After Seeing a Trench Dress on Meghan Markle, I decided to give the trend a try.
In the pictures I’m wearing a dress I’ve owned for a while. I purchased the dress at Cache. I’m not even sure those stores are still around. I would describe this dress as “safari chic”. The safari look is very similar to the military look. I like the new modern military look as its uniform type appearance always looks polished and put together. I think wearing this style sort of says I’m a woman on a mission and ready to be useful or at last I’ve got the pockets to carry your things.
The older we get, the more we are here to see fashion trends make their comeback. Some of the trends are good-think belt bags. While there are other trends that we may want leave alone. We’ve been there and done that.
Recently, I was having a cocktail with my friend Barb. She mentioned that she had found a picture of us from the 90’s and we were wearing short ruffled skirts. I told her that 90’s fashion is back. However, she quickly replied, “yes, but my 90’s body isn’t”….we both had a good laugh and then ordered another drink.
