I first tried dry brushing in my thirties. At that time, I had read that it helped to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Since cellulite was a concern of mine, I did a little research, and found that dry brushing was a simple technique that only required the purchase of a special brush.
Dry brushing has been around for many centuries. It was first used in Ayurvedic Medicine an holistic approach to good health.
Does Dry Brushing Work?
In addition to claiming to help diminish the appearance of cellulite, it does also work to remove flaky skin cells which gives your skin a smoother healthy glow. There are also claims that it increases your energy as the brushing is invigorating. Dry brushing also stimulates drainage to help rid your body of toxins.
Before you start a routine of dry brushing there are some important reasons not to try it. People that have eczema or psoriasis should not try dry brushing. If you have any open wounds dry brushing can cause an infection. Naturally, if you have any concerns you should consult with your doctor.
Now to start, you need to find the right brush. I recommend one with a longer handle and stiff bristles. There are ones with shorter handles, but I prefer a long one to be able to reach your back. Remember, as with other make up brushes you use, it’s important to wash your brush with a little soapy water every couple weeks.
With busy schedules I have found dry brushing is easiest right before a shower. Another good reason to brush right before a shower is that by sloughing off dead skin you open up pores which allows better absorption of your moisturizer and body oil applied afterwards.
Start at your feet with gentle upward strokes and work your way up your body towards your heart. Next, when you are ready for your arms, start at your hands and move your brush up towards your shoulder. In the beginning, try dry brushing about twice a week to start. As your skin tolerates it, you can increase the amount of days.
In conclusion, I do not feel that dry brushing did very much to reduce my cellulite. Because my priorities since I first began dry brushing have changed, I will once again add it to my beauty routine a few times a week. I like the way it helps to exfoliate my skin, as dry skin is more or a concern for me. Also, I also feel that the brushing gets your blood circulating giving me a temporary energetic boost. Anything that gives me a little pep without caffeine is a huge perk.

Great tips, Nancy! Thank you for sharing this information. I think I’ll add it to my routine- for the same reasons you mentioned.
