We are almost at the first anniversary of Hurricane Ian. Its aftermath was nothing like I had ever seen before. Although there were warnings of the storm approaching, no one could have imagined its impact. At the same time, some judged the decisions of those who stayed. Many remained to protect their businesses. This tropical paradise thrives on tourism, and for some, it is their primary source of income. Although the community suffered, the outpour of kindness escalated. The news recognized our hometown heroes. And neighbors worked optimistically together to rebuild their paradise.
We are now beginning to feel a sense of normalcy. Recently, my husband and I enjoyed exploring the greater Fort Myers Area and were impressed with the recovery efforts. We found new restaurants and neighborhoods and visited some old favorites along the way.
Our first stop was the Shangri-La Springs
I was pleasantly surprised with this charming Boutique hotel Located in the Heart of Bonita Springs, Florida. Built in 1921, the hotel has a full-service organic spa, an organic garden where they grow their vegetables and fruits, and an organic farm-to-table restaurant. We enjoyed a relaxing couple’s message on our visit and a delicious brunch at the Harvest & Wisdom Restaurant. The charm and character make the Shangri-La Springs a perfect venue for weddings and special events. With genuine friendly service and delicious cuisine, this place is a hidden gem, so add this to your list!
Later that night, we had dinner at The Bohemian. This uber-chic restaurant is ideal for girls’ nights or a fun date night. They offer sharable plates made with global influence using locally sourced ingredients and herbs from their rooftop garden.
My husband and I enjoyed playing 18 holes of golf the next day at Old Corkscrew. I enjoy the numerous golf courses in The Greater Fort Myers Area. It’s a true golfers’ paradise! Plus, if you can visit in the summertime, you can also take advantage of discounted greens fees.
Later that day, we savored a tasty dinner at Angelina’s. The restaurant is familiar to us, and it is to the many snowbirds here during the season. But we hadn’t visited in a while and were so happy to return. My meal was fantastic. I ordered the grilled branzino puttanesca. The popular Italian eatery has delicious food and romantic indoor intimate dining. In addition, if you’re a wine lover, you will be intrigued by their selection. The restaurant impressed us, and we look forward to our return.
Where To Stay in Fort Myers Area
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort and Spa. Their pool area had endured a destructive water surge from the hurricane, and it just recently re-opened. I was impressed with their pristine grounds and pool amenities. There are five water slides, private cabanas, a putting green, floating chipping green, and a lazy river! Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort and Spa is a very family-friendly resort. They also offer day passes, which I plan to get when my grandchildren visit.
However, do not rule out a romantic stay for couples, as you can immerse yourself in the warm rays of the sun poolside and sip tropical drinks under a cascading waterfall. You can relax around the fire pits at night with your favorite cocktail while enjoying the gentle gulf breeze.
Now I also must mention their beautiful hotel rooms with views of the Gulf of Mexico and fiery sunsets. The room décor has a modern coastal design, and a balcony, where I enjoyed my morning cup of cappuccino.
To close out our trip on Sunday, my husband and I visited the Koreshan State Park. Located along the Estero River, you can bike, hike, and explore the historic buildings. And, on Sundays, you can shop at the Farmers Market for the freshest produce while browsing local artisans.
We ate breakfast at the Survey Cafe. With fresh pastries and homemade specials, I had trouble deciding what to order. It’s a quaint little spot where locals gather. I finally decided and chose a quiche made with a puff pastry crust. However, I must confess that I ordered a homemade lemon tart for later.
If you are looking for a bit of history, charming cafés, lush golf courses, unique shopping, incredible sunsets, and luxurious modern hotel poolside adventures. I can’t imagine a better location than visiting the greater Fort Myers area.

Hello Rosemary,
I was excited to share about my recent experiences and that Fort Myers is coming back! I was extremely saddened by the devastation, yet proud of the community that came together to rebuild. I happy also that I found a few new restaurants that I really liked in doing research for this blog. Thank you for reaching out, and hopefully you and your family return on vacation and we can meet for a quick cup of coffee.
My Best,
Nancy
