Now a days many couples choose to say their vows outdoors surrounded by beautiful scenery. I was recently asked by a reader for suggestions on what to wear to a late August wedding in Colorado. My first thought was to find out if the ceremony and/or the reception were outdoors. This is significant as the weather always drops when the sun goes down. Next, I would check the average temperatures of the location to make sure you pack properly. It’s not just the dress for the reception that you need to be concerned with when traveling to a destination wedding. Aside from other scheduled events around the wedding, you will have some downtime and you will want to be prepared. In Colorado, that could be hiking, horseback riding, and biking the mountain trails, so you will also need to pack activewear.
What To Wear To A Mountain Top Wedding
The dress code and themes can go between dressy and dressy/casual depending on the venue. For a wedding that I attended on top of the mountains of Telluride, I wore a long maxi dress with shiny gold cowboy boots underneath. The flat boots were a good choice for getting on and off the ski lifts that took us up to the mountain top. They also kept me from stumbling as we walked along the rocky trails that led us to the ceremony location. Next, I would recommend bringing along a shawl, even though it’s August, mountain tops can be windy and that can bring a chill to the air.
After the ceremony, if the reception and dinner are inside, you can always swap out your shoes for a pair of pumps and leave the shawl at your table. However, the shawl, and low-heeled shoes will be a safer choice during the outdoor portion of your celebrations. (Use Code SARAHFLINT-BANANCYW for $50 off)
Colorado has a rustic casual atmosphere; I would suggest going to the website of the venue to check on the décor. Even though the invitation may have indicated the dress code, seeing the venue will give you more helpful insight on deciding what to wear.
Now, in answer to your question, what to wear to a Colorado Wedding?
I would keep the country elegant theme in mind. By this I mean simple, but tasteful. Longer maxi dresses are trending right now and the reason I suggest long is because something floral and on the flowy side can be both dressy and casual.
A sweeping hemline in a flower print expresses formality, with a chic casual style. Technically, it is still summer. For example, you could wear a long skirt, with a feminine blouse, and short booties.
If you were to choose a shorter dress, I would stick with silks, jerseys knits, and lighter woven fabrics. A sheath dress is always a classic choice that you can never go wrong with. Find one in earth tones, mustard, or navy.
One final tip, Colorado air is low in humidity, which is great, but the air is thin. You may have some trouble breathing and adjusting to the altitude. Take it easy on the alcohol or at least pace yourself and drink plenty of water in between cocktails. Cheers!

Hello Nancy,
I apologize for the delay in responding back to you as my thanksgiving house guests stayed thru December! I’m finally catching up here. I do feel that since the wedding will be held indoors if would be the same for weddings elsewhere in January. I would research the venue and the time of day, this will give you more of an indication as to what to wear. Once you are familiar with the setting, please feel free to email me as I would be happy to offer suggestions.
Regards,
Nancy
