An Unexpected Cancer Diagnosis
Just before Christmas my husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer. We are currently going through the steps of deciding how it should be treated and making sure it hasn’t spread. In a few days we will meet with the doctor. We are both anxious about what he is going to tell us.
When I started this blog I wanted to always remain positive, yet I vowed to myself that I would be sincere. Everyone has diversities in life. I asked my husband if he wanted me to mention his diagnosis on my blog. He told me that this is not just his story that this is our story. We have been together over forty years. There isn’t anything that we do not deal with together.
When we first heard he had cancer our first reaction was disbelief, how did it happen? For days we tried to analyze how he developed prostate cancer. This really was a waste of time because we’ll never know for certain. We both just wanted something to blame. Next, it was telling our children. That took a couple of weeks as we still needed to emotionally accept it ourselves. I wondered if there was a guidebook available on mentally processing a cancer diagnosis. One of those easy to read yellow books, such as Cancer for Dummies would have been useful. Either way, I saw my husband go through emotional highs and lows. We talked about it often, but I knew he was quietly struggling with the news. Then he had a dream, and this is where he found peace of heart and mind.
Daily, my husband writes a Christian Message to a group of our friends and family. I’m sharing a letter he wrote about his dream on the blog. It’s about faith and trusting God. We both agree that moving forward will take strength and no matter the outcome our faith is a powerful tool. I have formed many relationships through my blog, and I know that several of you are strong believers. Today I’m asking you to keep him in your prayers to win this battle with cancer.
A Letter from my Husband John
Over the last few years my faith has been tested many times. I know that God tests those he can use to share his messages so we have to be ready to accept any challenge he decides to send us. Life’s tribulations allow our faith to grow stronger. During those times we are also reminded that trusting God is the one thing that we need to do the most.
I was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. This form of cancer may have also affected some of you or someone you know. It’s quite common in men and for the most part curable. The key is that the cancer doesn’t escape the prostrate. I should be fine, but it is still concerning. I will be taking more tests next week to find out if the cancer has spread.
After finding out about the cancer I received a valuable message from my wife. She told me to look at all the good times you have had and will still have in life, and not focus on negativity. That I’ve been blessed with a great family and special friends that help make every challenge in life easier to overcome. Most importantly, she reminded me that we always have God on our side.
After receiving the news from the Doctor I went through a period of self-pity and aggravation. Then, during the middle of that night, I felt God telling me: John listen to what your wife said. Stay positive. John this time remember what you have been writing to others in your daily messages. Don’t worry. Have faith. He then told me to share a new message, He said, John, you wrote that God doesn’t give you more than you can handle. He then said if you think you can’t handle it then remember this message: There is nothing that God gives you that God can’t handle. He said John I am the cure for cancer.
Thus in the middle of the night I was given the cure for this cancer … it’s called FAITH!
If this cancer were to take my life away on earth it still can’t beat me because I will then have a new better life in heaven. We go to Heaven to continue to work on God’s plan. God’s plan is to help others. Helping others is what I like to do most in this world so the next world will be perfect.
It seems to me the Lord often guides us through dark days so that we are ready with understanding and comfort to help others who are troubled. We all need to provide words of encouragement for those who need to hear them. I’m ready to accept God’s challenge and be an example that Faith Does Indeed CureCancer. I thank God for using me to help spread this message. Keeping our faith during any trial is a powerful message to share. Sharing this message may just be your job to do to others in need.
Today’s message is not about my cancer diagnosis but to pass along the message that was given to me to share with you: FAITH IS A CURE FOR EVERYTHING. Thank you for reading the daily messages, I enjoy sending them. Our life experiences become more valuable when it equips us to help others. That’s why daily prayer and Bible reading are so essential.
I’m asking you for your prayers today. I have faith in the power of prayer. Thank you for your support as it helps to keep my positive outlook.
I’ll say this again, can cancer beat me? No way! I have FAITH!

A Positive attitude and faith are the key to life. I have navigated through much darkness over the last few years, but have never given up. Even in the darkest of moments there is always a piece of positive to be found if you look hard enough. Never give up for we will never give up on you. Family, Friends, and Faith is your cure. God Bless

I was diagnosed with PC in 2013. Never had elevated PSA but had symptoms. Elected to have robotic prostatectomy at Cleveland Clinic at age 60. Have had no negligible PSA since. Definitely have effects from surgery, but have learned to live with them.

Hello Garry,
I appreciate you emailing to let me know about your experience at Cleveland Clinic. My husband and I will know more this week and can decide on his future treatments. Cleveland clinic is an outstanding hospital and I’m happy things went well for you.

Hello Jami,
It’s so nice to hear from you! Thank you for the kind and thoughtful words. I passed along your email to John. He very much appreciated hearing that you enjoy his daily messages. We have recently moved to Naples, Florida so I’m not sure meeting up would be easy. Although golf is still an important part of our lives so you never know where we could run into you.
My Best,
Nancy
